PRESS RELEASE
TEAM HOLMATRO IN GOOD FORM WITH DIRK DE RIDDER=20
Portsmouth / UK, June 2 2006

On the fourth and last day of the Volvo Extreme 40 Grand Prix in
Portsmouth, the engine of Team Holmatro really got going. The Dutch
catamaran twice managed to be the first to cross the finish line. Guest
crew Dirk de Ridder from Pirates of the Caribbean thoroughly enjoyed his
ride and is keen on a follow-up. Team Basilica (GBR), with Allister
Richardson on the helm, kept cool and won the British series with a
distance. After seventeen races, Basilica is 31 points in advance of
runner-up Motorola =96 CHR. Tommy Hilfiger finished in a third position
and forfeited an early overall winning of the Grand Prix. The last race
in Rotterdam will be decisive. Team Holmatro is now in fourth position,
two points behind of Motorola =96 CHR (GBR).
=20
=93It was fantastic=94, De Ridder said afterwards. The smile on his face
confirms his enthusiastic statement. =93It was a great day with sun and =
a
nice breeze. The team got along well. Mitch also is an easy-going guy.
There is simply no stress on board. On the way back, I steered a bit and
the boats are absolutely great.=94 The Dutchman, who will start the =
eighth
leg of the Volvo Ocean Race on Friday, had to perform a though job on
the trampoline. De Ridder: =93I trimmed the jib, hoisted the spinnaker =
and
when we jibed, I had to winch the spi inside. That was hard work. In the
end, I had to take my coat off.=94 The first start was a textbook =
example
and by sailing neatly, Team Holmatro managed to keep the lead. De
Ridder: =93After that race, we had two bad starts and then you just =
can=92t
make up. In the last race, we were the last team to reach the upwind
buoy, but we jibed immediately because of a shift to the right. It=92s
incomprehensible that the others didn=92t. We won hands down.=94
=20
Not for softies
It is impressive to see how hard the men have to work. They jump across
the trampoline like grasshoppers. Sweat covers their foreheads and
sometimes their faces look grim. One moment two men pull a sheet. An
instance later, one of them puts on a spurt to help out on the other
side. =93The required age for the two bowmen on a Volvo Extreme 40 lies
between twenty and twenty-five=94, Alex Wiesinger says jokingly, after =
his
first day with team Holmatro. He gladly made way for the New-Zealander
Andy Meiklejohn from the Brasil 1. =93The job is physically very
demanding, so you have to be in top condition=94, says Wiesinger. The =
race
course in Portsmouth is very short. This means that two sailors are
continuously busy with the spinnaker, jib and traveller. Obviously,
VX40=92s are not for softies. That=92s not the way they are sailed.
Sometimes it resembles a race with 16-feet-multihulls. They don=92t =
budge
an inch and go far in claiming their right of way. Mistakes are
immediately punished. In Wednesday=92s second race, Team Holmatro =
lightly
scratched the upwind buoy. The team was in second position, but had to
take its penalty. After they had turned their round, they were in last
position. A bad start or boat handling can also be fatal.
Round the Island Race
On Saturday the five Volvo Extreme 40=92s will make their first =
appearance
in a regular catamaran race: the Round the Island Race. They will
compete with other multi-hulls, sailing fifty miles round the Isle of
Wight. After that, the boats will be taken apart and brought to
Rotterdam for the last Grand Prix of this season. If it depends on
Holmatro helmsman Mitch Booth, Dirk de Ridder will step on board again.
De Ridder: =93If I can find a blank spot in my diary, I=92ll gladly join
them. That=92s what I told Mitch. Otherwise, it will happen next =
year.=94
/// The end
