PRESS RELEASE
BUNDOCK/ASHBY UNBEATABLE ON SECOND DAY TEXEL DUTCH OPEN=20
Volvo Open 70=92s pass by Texel=20
Texel / Netherlands, June 15 2006

On the second day of the Texel Dutch Open, Darren Bundock and Glenn
Ashby (AUS) were unbeatable. The Hobie Tiger-duo took three bullets. The
weather conditions were fine with a north-eastern wind, force four and a
considerable wash of waves. In total 43 teams started this morning.
Mischa Heemskerk and Sander de Boer (NED) finished three times behind
the Australians, with their Nacra F18 Infusion. Koen de Koning and Sacha
Larsen (NED), also sailing with the new Nacra, are in third position
after today.
=20
The Polish Noetzel/Kaliski were quick with their explorer 20, but on
rating they could not beat the Dutch and French F18-teams. They are now
fifth position on the leaderboard. In the afternoon, more than forty
catamarans sailed through the notorious =91Molengat=92 to the =91Hors=92 =
after
eating a =91scholletje=92 (plaice) they returned to =91Paal 17=92. In =
the
evening, the Volvo Open 70=92s, with the Brasil 1 in the lead, passed
close to the shore. The six participants in the Volvo Ocean Race are now
sailing their ninth and last leg to Gothenburg in Sweden. They are
expected to arrive there on the 17th of June 2006, the day of the
Zwitserleven Round Texel.
=20
=91Just a little bit rusty=92
=93We were a bit rusty=94, Mischa Heemskerk said, while taking the boat =
to
the pit lane. =93We weren=92t sailing together smoothly and our rivals =
were
sailing quite fast. Nevertheless, it was an excellent day.=94 Mischa
Heemskerk and Sander de Boer, winners of the Zwitserleven Round Texel
2006 finished three times in second place, behind the Australians Darren
Bundock and Glenn Ashby. They were just too strong for us. Bundock: =
=93In
the first race, the difference was considerable, after that we had to
fight more to stay in the lead.=94 Heemskerk and De Boer could only just
keep the boat upright in the surf on their way back to the beach. De
Boer: =93We were completely washed by a wave. It was a good thing that =
we
had that photo shoot on the waves of La Torche last year, otherwise we
definitely would have capsized.=94
=20
The seventeen-year-old Chris Rashly and Marcus Lynch (UK) literally had
a flying start, with which they obtained a third position. Lynch: =93We
had a problem with the jib, and therefore had to return to shore. When
we sailed out again, we did not know how much time we still had. Close
to the starting vessel all the teams were lined up, so we could join
them immediately and sail straight to the upwind mark.=94 Jean-Christoph
Mourniac and Frank Citeau had to get used to smaller cats again. They
have been racing with 60-feet trimarans lately. During the Grand Prix in
Nice they even nose dived, sailing the Banque Populair. Citeau about the
return to the Formula 18: =93It was tough. My trapeze broke and I lost =
the
spinnaker sheet. During the last race we improved.=94 For the time being
the French Nissan Pro Team is in fourth position.
TNG Short Track
The organisation invited ten top teams to race the TNG Short Track in
front of the beach at Paal 17 on Friday afternoon. This is a series of
three drop-out races. In the last race the two remaining boats can
compete for overall victory. Naturally, the winner takes home the
TNG-prize. The Round Texel eporter, Jeroen Tirion, will report the
battle. This way, the people onshore can follow the race.
Live reports
Saturday, the big TV-screen on the beach will display the Zwitserleven
Round Texel race live. People at home can also witness every detail,
because thanks to I-net they can follow everything real time via the
internet. The event will also reach the living rooms via Astra and cable
in Texel and Noord-Holland. Radio channel 3FM and broadcaster TROS will
spread their wings over the island on Saturday and they will be on the
air live from the beach.
Top five after five races of Texel Dutch Open:
1. Bundock/Ashby (AUS), F18, 3 points
2. Heemsker/De Boer (NED), F18, 7 points
3. De Koning/Larsen (NED), F18, 13 points
4. Mourniac/Citeau (FRA), F18, 15 points
5. Noetzel/Kaliski (POL), explorer 20, 16,5 points
Apart from Zwitserleven, the event is also sponsored by TNG Swiss
Watches, Repeat Sales Promotions, W&H/Liebherr, Yamaha Nederland,
Nissan, Teso, VVV Texel, TROS, RoT Events, the Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep,
de Meeuw, Zeilen and the Province Noord-Holland.
