Subject: Re: Press release.
"The second week on July is fast becoming one of the great weeks of
catamaran racing as the Formula 18 fleet descend upon their appointed
venue. This year they are all going to the perfect location of Hyeres in
Southern France.
The competition to get into the 160 teams has surpassed all
expectation.. Earlier in F18 history, each country was allowed to send
one team for every seven National Association members. Those days have
gone with the massive and rapid rise in popularity of the F18 circuit
around the world. Now only the very best of each country can complete in
the biggest F18 event on the racing calendar.
As M.Olivier Bovyn, President of the F18 World Council states " This
year will be great collection of multihull talent every to assemble
together, we will have F18 National Champions from sixteen countries,
all the past F18 World Champions and many Tornado stars are joining in
as well. The winner of this event is truly gaining the accolade of one
of the greatest multihull sailors of our time."
The 160 teams will sail in a Round Robin of four fleets of forty boats,
before being divided into Gold and Silver fleets. At the moment, F18
Championship Rules state that they can't have fleets above 80 on a start
line. BUT there is real pressure, as the World Fleet grows, to increase
this number, or the only attendees at the Worlds will become an even
more exclusive fleet !!
After Hyeres in July 2006, the F18 fleets move to Australia in February
2007. This is the first time that the World Championships have been held
outside Europe and already major efforts are being made to ensure that
many containers go to Yeppoon, 500 kms North on Brisbane. This is an
ideal location on the edge of the Barrier Reef in the tropics of
Queensland. As the fleet is moving out of Europe for the first time,
this 2007 World Championship is OPEN, so any sailors, with a National
Association F18 membership can go and sail with the world best multihull
sailors.Diary dates are 20th to 25th February 2007.
